The Sleeping Giant Has Awoken

All I can say is what a first week. With excitement swirling the offense and mystery clouding the pitching staff, to the surprise of many, it was the arms who have made the biggest contribution to the 5-1 start. The top three of the rotation look to be reliable. As even with Nola only going 4 innings against the Mets, he still escaped nearly every jam unscathed. Thankfully, the offense and the bullpen were there to pick our ace up. Perhaps even bigger than anything was the feel surrounding the team. Honestly, this whole blog could be summed up in one sentence:

The Phillies Are Fun Again.

Now I won’t end there because I know you’re all like me and can’t get enough Phillies content. I was fortunate enough to attend two of our games so far this season. I was in attendance for Wheelers’ debut and sadly, our only loss. In two games that couldn’t have been any different, one thing remained the same. The energy in CBP was unlike anything I’ve experienced in a long time. It was as if two full years of pent-up Philly fan aggression was being released as excitement seeing our guys take the field again. Personally, I didn’t let a single rival fan walk by without showering them with Boo Birds. My eyes told me there was only 8-10k people in the stands but my ears certainly didn’t. I was astonished by how loud the crowd managed to be. Then with Zack Wheeler doing his best Shohei Ohtani impression and ripping an RBI double, I heard what felt like the first real MVP chant at the Bank in over a decade.

Just when I thought the last game was the most electric feel I’d seen, the Mets rolled into town. Despite the loss, CBP was roaring all night. Rally towels, t-shirts, it didn’t matter what they gave away, every fan was standing and waving them above their heads throughout the game. While we could sit here and dwell on the one-loss we’ve had (161-1 is still in play) I’m choosing to rather observe how unlike in years past, the team didn’t seem to quit when the going got tough. They seemed to feed off the energy of fans. Let me just say… if our fans and the team can each keep it up throughout 162, Philly is going to be a tough place to play.
